Last week Spidchain took part in the BNP Paribas International Hackathon final phase and… we won it!
It has been a long journey, which started last June with the earliest phase of the competition, 48 intense hours of developing, happening at the same time in 10 cities all around the world: San Francisco, Paris, Brussels, Luxembourg, Rome, Berlin, Warsaw, Istanbul, Singapore and Nanjing.
We won round after round, working in close contact with the people at LUISS ENLABS, BNL Gruppo BNP Paribas and BNL Wealth Management, who gave us feedbaks and advice to adjust and improve our idea: a solution to improve portability, security and privacy of digital identity when signing up to and logging in websites that require certified data (e.g. when opening a new bank account).
After winning the second phase of the competition in October, we were selected, together with fellow LUISS ENLABS teams BB Boyz and Mendua, to participate in the final round of the competition during the Paris Demo Day and thus to present our solution in front of an international jury composed of a delegation of the BNP Paribas Executive Committee and fintech experts. We kept improving our work in order to arrive in Paris with a solution that could effectively compete on international ground, and we can now say we succeeded in our purpose, as our blockchain-based solution was awarded for the international integration and scalability, in a tie with Inspirient.
Last but not least, the 3rd award of the #SuperDemoDay is a tie between @inspirient and @SpidChain! Awarded for the international integration and scalability! #InternationaHackathon pic.twitter.com/NmL77GGGlB— BNP Paribas Group (@BNPParibas) 1 dicembre 2017
The BNP Paribas International Hackathon saw 160 startups competing from all around the world. As Spidchain CEO Gabriele Marazzi stated soon after the award ceremony, “this is the real strength of this hackathon, the fact that it involved so many different cities, because diversity is key to innovation”. We got a chance to look closely at many projects created by teams from all over the world, and to present our solution to an international audience. This is what innovation needs: people from different backgrounds coming together with different takes and solutions.
Of course winning the hackathon is not just a title. We now have the possibility to integrate our solutions in the services provided by BNL, a process we look forward to. Our solution was created for the bank's Wealth Management, but it also involves other areas. We thank the people in the IT and legal departments of BNL BNP Paribas, who validated our solutions from a technical and legal standpoint, hoping we can keep working together for innovation.
